🎧 Episode Excerpt
When grassroots organisations grow fast, HR can fall behind — creating stress, risk, and uncertainty. In this episode of HR2Go, Karen Arnold speaks with Tash from Aussie Helpers, a rural charity supporting farmers and remote communities across Australia.
Tash shares what it looked like behind the scenes when HR systems weren’t keeping up — and how putting practical foundations in place helped her team move from overwhelm to confidence.
If you’ve ever worried that getting HR support might feel too corporate for your culture, this is a must-listen.
“It’s not red tape — it’s relief.”
🌾 Meet Aussie Helpers: Supporting Rural Australia
Karen:
Welcome to HR2Go by Effective Workplace Solutions. In this episode, we’re talking about what happens when a business — especially a purpose-driven one — is growing fast but the HR foundation isn’t keeping up.
I’m joined today by Tash from Aussie Helpers, an organisation doing incredible work supporting farmers across Australia.
Karen:
Before we dive in, Tash, would you like to tell our listeners a bit about the amazing work that Aussie Helpers does?
Tash:
Absolutely. Aussie Helpers is a rural charity focused on supporting farmers and rural communities, especially when things get tough.
We’re on the ground during droughts, floods, fires — or just when someone needs a hand. That might be through food hampers, direct support, or simply checking in.
It’s all about letting people know they’re not alone. We believe in showing up when it matters.
⚠️ The HR Struggles of Growing Not-for-Profits
Karen:
As with so many purpose-driven organisations, the work on the ground often moves faster than the systems behind it.
Can you give us a picture of what things looked like behind the scenes before we started working together?
Tash:
Behind the scenes, things were busy and a little messy. Like a lot of growing teams, we were focused on our mission, and our HR processes just didn’t keep pace.
We were often reacting instead of feeling prepared. There was stress about whether we were compliant, how to handle certain staff situations — and honestly, we didn’t know what we didn’t know. It felt risky and heavy.
⏳ Why Small Teams Delay HR — and What It Costs
Karen:
That feeling of HR being chaotic or overwhelming is so common — especially when people are wearing multiple hats.
What made it hard to carve out time to fix the issues?
Tash:
We all had so much on, and HR kept getting pushed to the bottom of the list.
I was also worried that bringing in HR help would feel too corporate or too formal for my kind of team. I wasn’t sure it would fit.
HR is one of those things you know is important, but it doesn’t shout the loudest. And I thought it would be a time-consuming, over-complicated process that didn’t suit how we worked at Aussie Helpers.
🛠️ Custom HR Support That Fits the Culture
Karen:
When we started talking, you weren’t looking for a quick fix — you wanted sustainable solutions.
What were you hoping to get out of working with an HR partner?
Tash:
We weren’t after a patch-up job. We needed proper foundations — something solid but practical that made sense for our team.
Mostly, we just wanted peace of mind. To feel like we had things covered, and that our people felt supported and confident.
Karen:
That’s what we focused on — practical things like contracts, onboarding, policies, and support for your team on the ground.
Tash:
You made it feel achievable. You didn’t try to push a corporate playbook onto us. The support felt tailored, collaborative, and human.
Having onboarding templates and policies that we could actually implement was a game-changer.
✅ What Changed After Implementing HR Systems
Karen:
What would you say has changed since putting those systems in place?
Tash:
It’s night and day. We’re onboarding faster. We’ve got a clear path for staff conversations.
We’re not second-guessing ourselves anymore. Having a solid HR foundation took a massive weight off. And I know I can just pick up the phone when I need support.
💬 Advice for Leaders Putting Off HR Support
Karen:
Many leaders worry that formalising HR might slow them down or add red tape.
What would you say to someone still putting it off?
Tash:
I wish we’d done it 12 months ago. Getting the right HR support gives you more freedom.
It’s not red tape — it’s relief.
It helps your people feel safe and helps you lead with confidence.
If you’ve been putting it off — don’t wait. It makes everything so much easier.
🌱 What’s Next for Aussie Helpers?
Karen:
It’s been amazing watching the transformation in your team. What’s next for Aussie Helpers?
Tash:
We’re continuing to grow, but we want to do it in a way that’s steady and sustainable.
We’re expanding our Breaking a Bag program, which delivers school breakfasts to kids in remote and rural areas. We’re also looking to do more for rural communities.
Now that our HR foundation is solid, we feel more confident taking those steps.
🎙️ Final Thoughts from Karen Arnold
Karen:
If you’re listening and HR is the part of your business you keep avoiding — you’re not alone.
Building strong foundations doesn’t have to be overwhelming. And it frees you up to lead with confidence.
We’re always happy to chat about practical HR solutions that are built for how your business actually works.
