The Problem

An employee at a hair salon was absent for multiple days without communication, despite the employer leaving lots of messages. This resulted in last-minute appointment cancellations and damage to the business’s reputation, leading to client loss.

Our Solution

We assessed the client’s policies and identified a critical gap: the absence of an employee absenteeism policy. In response, we guided the client through a best-practice process, drawing insights from case law. We composed a comprehensive letter, delivered both via email and registered post, while also sending a text message requesting an urgent explanation for the absence. We emphasised that failure to respond might result in the employer deeming the employment abandoned. Over the next 14 days, we advised the client to make two or three additional contact attempts. Despite our diligent efforts, when no response materialised, we dispatched a second letter, formally terminating the employment due to abandonment.

Our meticulous adherence to correct procedures minimised the employer’s risk. This swift resolution empowered the client to resume business operations, promptly filling the vacancy. Moreover, we collaborated with the client to implement a robust workplace policy, ensuring clear guidelines for addressing similar situations in the future.
